Beauty Shoot using Gels and a Beautiful Necklace

Concept:

Upon entering a vintage shop in my area, I came across this beautiful necklace by Lacer Suite. I was instantly inspired to create using this piece and to set up a photoshoot. We asked model, Paris, to work with us on this project, as she had the strong eye features we were looking for. The makeup artist used deep blues and focused on making the eyes bold and fierce to tie in perfectly with the theme of the shoot. She styled her hair back and did a fishtail braid to keep the look feminine, yet strong. I used colored gels to bring a distinct pop of color and create distinct shadows.

Key Light:

This photo is a picture of the main studio strobe for the model. It is a D2 Profoto Monoblock

Main Light, Profoto D2, and a 27" Impact Lighting Beauty Dish

The key light, a profoto monolight, was set up high and to the right of the model. Attached to it is a 27" beauty dish with a grid. It was roughly 3 1/2' away from the model. It was at a 45 degree and set up high above her head. It was positioned slightly higher than usual, of which would normally create raccoon eyes in your subject. The purpose of this light was create separation from the fill light, shadow area. It also covered her hair as she held it in her hand.

Fill Light:

The fill light was positioned below the models face, pointing upwards, to fill in the shadow areas. I placed a barn door on it to direct the light to fill the shadow areas around her eyes. The key light was placed too high to completely cover her face, so the fill light helped with coverage, along with applying the red color tone.

Background Light:

The background light, a Profoto D2, had a grid attached to it and a Rosco Blue Gel. The grid was placed on it to narrow the light onto the backdrop. I positioned the light to hit directly behind the model, onto the backdrop. The grid narrowed it enough to create a natural vignette in-camera.
