Simple 2 Light Setup on a Coral Colored Seamless Paper

Updated: Aug 21, 2018

Concept:

This Photoshoot involving a two light set up was simple and fun. Working with model Nicole, she gave us great movement and a variety of poses which allowed me to capture the joy she exuded. For the Photoshoot, we picked up a floral top along with pink shades as a prop. The makeup artist kept her makeup soft, while enhancing Nicole’s natural beauty. She focused on soft pinks and greens to compliment her skin and eyes. All of this resulted in great commercial shots.

Finals:

Camera Settings: 1/200, f/8, ISO 64

Main Light:

For this look, you can use a small softbox or a deep umbrella. The idea is to have enough coverage of light over the mode’s face and torso. In this example I use a 27” Beauty Dish from Impact Studio Lighting with a grid attached to it. I have it on a D2 Profoto strobe. Again, you can use any brand of strobes. To suit your budget speedlights can be used instead, as well. It is a matter of understanding light, how to harness the look you want, put them into the correct position in front of your subject and fire away. In this case I position the main light about 18 to 24 inches away from the model.

Background Light:

The background light, a 20" Impact Beauty Dish, attached to a Profoto D2 strobe completes our 2 light setup. This light is doing two things here.

First, it separates the subject from the backdrop, allowing you to see the beautiful coral color in the background. The separation from the light also let's you view the model more clearly with regards to her shape and what she is wearing.

Secondly, the background light creates a natural, but partial, in-camera vignette. If you'll notice in the final photos, behind the models head, the color of the backdrop fades away and becomes darker and darker. This is due to the height relationship where the strobe is placed compared to the height of your subject.
