Thumbtack Mask Beauty Photoshoot

Updated: Jul 28, 2018

The main attraction in this Photoshoot, was the thumbtack mask! The mask, created by Chrissy the Creator and her assistant Sarah, was what inspired the other details for this shoot. The mask was made of actual thumbtacks and sprayed a shimmering gold to really stand out. The dress, that model Paris wore, was lent to us by the high end boutique, Versailles. To tie together the entire gold theme, the makeup artist focused on a bold gold eye look and kept the hair down while adding in some big curls. With such a dramatic prop it was important to keep the overall look of the image bold, strong, and gold. With that being said, we also used a reflector to ensure we had the most light reflecting off the gold thumbtack mask, as well as the sequence in the dress.

Camera Settings: 1/200 sec, f/8, ISO 100

Key Light:

The main light here is set up straight in front of the model, clam shell beauty lighting style. In order to shoot her straight on, I had to place the light onto a boom arm. It was a D2 profoto with a 27" Impact beauty dish. I have the strobe on an Impact Steel Roller with a grip arm attached to it. This would make it easier for me to shoot the model without the upright pole being directly in front of her.

Hair Light:

This photo has a model sitting on a chair with a studio strobe with a beauty dish attached to it. The purpose is to be used as a hair light.

For the hair light I used another beauty dish. This light is used as a hair light, but also to separates the model from the backdrop. It will add highlights to the hair and shoulders. Be sure to place it high above, facing downward over the model's head.

Fill Light:

This is a photo of a photographer, model, and assistant. The assistant is holding a reflector underneath the models face, to bounce light from the strobe under her chin, for fill light.

To complete the clamshell lighting setup, to assist, Shaun Rodriguez held a reflector below the models face. The reflector served to add fill in the shadow areas under her chin and on her neck. We used the silver and the gold sides of the reflector. Normally, gold has too much color pop but we decided to use it on one of the photos. We definitely preferred how the silver side of the reflector added to the overall look.
